Blue Mountains Patient Information

Patients booked for elective surgery

  • Once the booking office has received your paperwork, bookings staff will phone or contact you by letter to offer you a date for our surgery.
  • Please contact the Bookings office on 4784 6579 immediately if any of your personal details change.

Things to know before you come for a procedure

  • Fasting instructions: You will be given a fasting brochure at the time of your booking. If you are not sure about this please contact Bookings.
  • Pre-admission clinic-If you have been scheduled for Pre-Admission clinic please ensure you keep these appointments.
  • If you are feeling unwell within the week prior to your surgery or something unexpected comes up please call Booking Office as early as possible to let us know. You may also need to visit your general practitioner to assess whether you are well enough for surgery.
  • Please let us know if you can’t make it, even on the day. The earlier you let us know the better and we can do our best to rebook your procedure as well as using the theatre time for someone else if possible.
  • Medications: please bring all your medications you regularly take when you come in for the procedure.
  • Do not wear make-up, nail polish or jewelry.
  • Do not drink alcohol or smoke for twelve (12) hours before your procedure.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can easily be changed.

On arrival at Hospital

  • Enter through the emergency entrance on Woodlands road and report to the Cashier to sign admission forms.  You will be directed to the waiting room and asked to take a seat. Please note: this is arrival time only; there will be some waiting involved before your procedure. We advise you to make no other plans for this day.
  • We also advise that emergencies/unforeseen events occasionally occur in the theatre or surgery. If this occurs, you will be rescheduled for another date (as advised by your surgeon).
  • If you are accompanied by a support person he/she may be permitted into the ward depending on your condition and course of recovery.

What You Will Need in Hospital

  • Please ensure you have a responsible person to collect you and take you home from hospital.  When you go home, you should have another person staying with you.
  • Bring your current medication with you.
  • Please bring toiletries, pyjamas, dressing gown and slippers.
  • Do not bring valuable items or money to hospital. If you do bring them we cannot be responsible for these items. If you do need to secure any items please discuss with your nurse on the ward.
