The Aboriginal Cadetship program provides opportunities for Aboriginal people to gain education and employment in the field of nursing and midwifery. The program aims to increase the number of Aboriginal nurses and midwives working in NSW and to improve career development opportunities for Aboriginal employees working in the public health system.
Cadets must be enrolled in a recognised course to study as a registered nurse or registered midwife. Whilst they are studying, the cadets are employed by Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District to work on a ward for 12 weeks/year as assistants in nursing or midwifery: this allows them to gain valuable clinical experience.
Recruitment is through the NSW Nursing and Midwifery Office; application criteria and forms may be found on the NSW Health website or contact NBMLHD Coordinator
