Patient feedback on District Cancer Services reveals positive results

Ninety-nine per cent of Nepean Cancer and Wellness Centre patients rated their care as either ‘very good’ or ‘good’, according to a 2020 NSW Bureau of Health Information survey of outpatient cancer clinics.
94 per cent of the 300 patients surveyed said they would ‘speak highly’ of the care they received at the Nepean Cancer and Wellness Centre when talking to friends and family about their experience.
The survey highlighted the success of our multidisciplinary care team with 98 per cent of patients rating the way our health professionals worked together to coordinate care as ‘very good’ or ‘good’. Almost all respondents (99 per cent) also said their care was well organised.
Patients also reported staff were polite (95 per cent), always treated them with respect and dignity (99 per cent) and respected their cultural and religious beliefs (97 per cent). Majority of patients (95 per cent) reported staff were always kind and caring towards them.
Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Chief Executive Kay Hyman says it’s pleasing to see such positive feedback on the District’s cancer services.
“We endeavour to give our patients undergoing cancer treatment the best possible experience of care. Our health care teams undertake their work with the greatest compassion and respect and it’s positive to see this reflected in the results of the survey,” Ms Hyman says.
“We are committed to applying the feedback gained from surveys such as this to continue improving our services to the community.”
In 2019, construction was completed on an additional chemotherapy day ward and a third radiation therapy bunker at the Nepean Cancer and Wellness Centre on the Nepean Hospital campus.
This expansion was delivered as part of the $1 billion Nepean Hospital Redevelopment, which includes a new and expanded emergency department, more than 200 inpatient beds, neonatal intensive care unit, maternity unit and operating theatres in a new 14-storey tower currently under construction.
Between mid-2012 and mid-2021, NBMLHD increased its workforce by an additional 1,324 full-time equivalent staff - an increase of 37.1 per cent including 183 more doctors, 501 more nurses and midwives and 199 more allied health staff.
The 2020-21 budget for NBMLHD was over $904 million, an increase of more than $29 million on the 2019-20 budget.
