Students keen to take on COVID wards

27 Oct 2021

In a first for NSW, undergraduate students recently joined Nepean Hospital to assist our health staff with clinical care in COVID-19 wards.

The pilot program saw 36 students from Western Sydney University complete their final work placement at one of Sydney's busiest teaching hospitals and in some of the hospital’s most critical and demanding wards.

Getting straight into the important work, students spent their first day of placement getting mask fit-tested and trained in full PPE procedures. They also received training on understanding COVID-19, recognising patient deterioration and escalating care of a patient.

"I am so happy to have the opportunity to work with this wonderful group of enthusiastic 3rd year students,” says Barbra Monley, Nurse Educator and ClinConnect Coordinator with Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District’s Education and Training Service.

“I was so impressed with their eagerness to be involved, to give back to the community and to assist our staff where they can, at this difficult time."
