Statement from Kay Hyman, Chief Executive, Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District
20 Aug 2021
Sadly a man in his 80s from western Sydney died at Nepean Hospital, where he acquired his infection. There have now been two deaths linked to the outbreak at Nepean Hospital.
A previously reported COVID-19 death - a man in his 70s from western Sydney who died on August 17 at Nepean Hospital – is now also linked to this outbreak.
On behalf of our staff, I extend our deepest sympathies to both men’s families and friends.
These are the first deaths linked to the previously reported outbreak at the Hospital. The source of the transmission is under investigation.
To 8pm last night, there are 2 new cases of COVID-19 linked to the Nepean Hospital outbreak. Both are staff.
There are now 19 cases linked to Nepean Hospital - 12 patients and 7 staff.
To 8pm last night, there were no new cases linked to the separate outbreak at the Nepean Mental Health Centre.
There are 25 cases linked to the Nepean Mental Health Centre outbreak - 24 consumers and 1 staff member.
The total number of cases across the two separate exposures is now 44.
Seventy per cent of staff members at Nepean Hospital are fully vaccinated. Only fully vaccinated staff work in the COVID-19 wards and other high risk areas in the hospital.
Nepean Hospital, including the Emergency Department, remains open.
All NSW public hospitals have strict protocols in place to help protect staff, patients and visitors from COVID-19.
The hospital follows strict infection prevention and control measures, including personal protective equipment (PPE), face mask fit-testing, hand hygiene and thorough cleaning of all areas.
To protect patients, visitors to the hospital continue to be limited to only those visiting for exceptional circumstances.
