Become a midwife at NBMLHD with MidStart

06 Jun 2022

If you’re a Registered Nurse who would like to join the midwifery workforce – now is your chance. Applications for the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery (MidStart) 2023 are open now until 4pm Wednesday 8 June.

MidStart is a 12 month postgraduate diploma is a career pathway allowing registered nurses to become registered midwives. It involves employment as a student midwife while studying a postgraduate midwifery diploma.

Joining our NBMLHD midwifery teams means you get to experience modern new facilities for birthing and maternity care at Nepean, and a true community connection at Lithgow Hospital.

With around 5,000 babies born at NBMLHD every year, there are so many opportunities to learn and put theory into practice.

NBMLHD midwifery educator Deb Gaynor encouraged registered nurses to apply.

“At Lithgow, we are a small facility, but I think we punch above our weight offering placements for one to two midwifery students a year,” says Deb.

“They can get their midwifery qualifications in a rural facility which gives our students a different perspective.”

“We get great feedback when our students rotate to Nepean and work in complex areas such as Special Care Nursery and Antenatal Unit.”

“Everybody goes out of their way to make sure the students get the experiences, education and support they need,” says Deb.

Applications are now open and will close at 4pm on 8 June. Intakes are offered at Nepean and Lithgow hospitals for February 2023.
