Family, community and local businesses joined together to honour the life of long-time Blue Mountains resident, Jan Ryk ‘John’ van Os, by raising money for a new ice machine at Springwood Hospital.

Blue Mountains and Springwood hospitals General Manager Andrea Williams says the ice machine provides relief for patients who are unable to drink or easily swallow liquids.

“We are so grateful for the wonderful support from John’s wife, Robyn, their children and the Blue Mountains community who have raised over $6,000 for Springwood Hospital,” says Mrs Williams.

The machine which makes ice and chills water was purchased for $4,800 with the additional funds raised going to the Springwood Hospital Auxiliary for other patient care projects.

Mrs van Os says she is both proud of and thankful for the kindness and generosity of the Blue Mountains community.

“The staff at Springwood Hospital allowed our family to be involved in John’s care which was so important for him and us,” says Mrs van Os.

“At the Hospital John was able to go outside, to feel the sun and breeze and put his feet on the grass. It was very special.”

John and Robyn ran a guttering business in the Mountains for 35 years and built strong connections to the community and local businesses as well as the Blue Mountains District Rugby Football Club where John was a player and coach.

“It was important for us to give a little back to the Blue Mountains community,” says Robyn van Os.

Mrs van Os says she is grateful for the support of friends, businesses and sporting clubs who helped raise money.

She thanks all donors and particularly wants to acknowledge the support of Coates Hire Penrith, Oracle Windows, Pinnacle Taxation, TerryWhite Chemmart Winmalee, Blue Mountains Rugby and Faulconbridge Public School.
