Physiotherapy PrEPP patients for surgery

01 Nov 2019

The Physiotherapy Department at Nepean Hospital are improving the lives of patients who undergo major abdominal and thoracic surgery with some simple PrEPP.

Developed by a multi-disciplinary team, the comprehensive Pre-operative Exercise and Prehabilitation Program, known as PrEPP, gives high risk patients a 2-4 week program covering pre-operative chest physiotherapy, group exercise classes, and a patient education handbook.

The program has been shown to help reduce complications and improve patient outcomes and recovery after surgery.

Nepean Hospital’s Physiotherapy Department Head, Shelley Boyle said the program has been a great initiative resulting in happier and healthier patients.

“In the last 18 months PrEPP has seen more than 150 patients and shown improvement in length of stay (1.6 days shorter), 30 per cent less readmission rates and a 20 per cent reduction in pneumonia. Patient satisfaction and compliance with the program has been exceptional,” said Mrs Boyle.

The program has been recognised by the Agency for Clinical Innovation as an innovative model of care and the first of its kind in NSW.
