13 May 2022

An innovative early intervention program from Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District’s Child and Youth Mental Health Service has earnt the team statewide accolades as finalists for the Excellence in the Provision of Mental Health Services Award at the NSW Health Awards 2021.

The program, Space Camp, is a neuroscience evidence-informed early intervention program that supports families and school staff to meet a child’s broad developmental needs. It is responsive to a child’s unique diversities to help optimise childhood wellbeing.

“Space Camp delivers foundational concepts that everybody who interacts with them comes to understand themselves and their relationships with others in a new way. This self-understanding is so important to be able to develop new ways to approach the world,” says Clinical Lead, Amanda Horton-Hallet.

“We are so thrilled to be finalists. For us, it means that early intervention is really being acknowledged, and there is such amazing, complex clinical work being done in that space.”

The winners of the NSW Health Awards will be announced on Thursday 19 May.
