Accolades at State awards for community nurse
05 Oct 2018
Primary Care and Community Health nurse Rachel Scobie has won the Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healthcare Award at the 2018 NSW Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.
Ms Scobie was amongst a record six Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District nurses and midwives nominated as finalists at the awards – the most finalists from any Local Health District.
The NSW Nursing and Midwifery Awards acknowledge the contribution and dedication of the 52,000 nurses and midwives working across the state in the NSW public health system.
Health Minister Brad Hazzard presented Ms Scobie with the Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healthcare Award at a ceremony held at Parliament House on 27 September.
Ms Scobie works to deliver Integrated Care for people with chronic conditions through Primary Care and Community Health at Lemongrove Community Health Centre.
She is an inspirational leader for her Aboriginal peers as she partakes in clinical supervision and pays particular attention to the cultural needs of the local Aboriginal population.
“I’m an Aboriginal person myself so I’m keen to improve our engagement with Aboriginal community members. It’s really important to have Aboriginal people supported by Aboriginal healthcare workers. They feel better supported by having people come out who understand how they’re living and how they interact socially,” says Rachel.
“There’s lots of really hard-working Aboriginal Health workers in the community. I link in with them all the time, so my nomination also reflects the great work they do."
