27 Apr 2022
Principal Clinical Psychologist at Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD), Dr Laura Kirsten is a nationally recognised expert in the field of psycho-oncology.
Her outstanding contributions to clinical excellence at local, state and national levels will this month be recognised at the NSW Health Excellence in Allied Health Awards where Dr Kirsten is a finalist in the Allied Health Researcher of the Year category.
“It is a real privilege to be a finalist in the Awards. I know that NSW Health has some incredible Allied Health Educators and Researchers so being recognised in this way is an honour,” Dr Kirsten says.
Dr Kirsten works to translate research findings and conduct research into practice to ensure people living with life limiting cancer diagnoses receive care underpinned by the best available evidence.
With an enviable research track record, she has published almost 50 peer-reviewed articles and is widely cited.
Dr Kirsten has been chief investigator on major projects funded by the Australian Research Council and the Cancer Institute NSW, among others. She has established numerous collaborations with academic partners at the University of Sydney, Western Sydney University and the Cancer Council, NSW.
Recognising the potential for increasing research activity to improve services, Dr Kirsten also serves on the Allied Health Research Committee at NBMLHD, and has established the Clinicians Research Interest Group of the Psycho-oncology Cooperative Group, a clinical trials group.
“As a scientist-practitioner, I am often inspired in my research to work out how can we improve things for our consumers, our staff and the broader community,” Dr Kirsten says.
Dr Kirsten is one of five finalists from Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District at the NSW Health Excellence in Allied Health Awards.
