We’re supporting the Great Registration Race for DonateLife Week
28 Jul 2022
Throughout July and August, we’re joining the race to encourage 100,000 more Australians to register as organ and tissue donors.
Right now, there are around 1,750 Australians waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. But there are around 13 million people aged 16+ who are eligible to register as organ and tissue donors who haven’t yet signed up.
Jodie Cowell, Donation Specialist Nurse, Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District, says just one organ donor can save the lives of as many as seven people.
“Organ donation is rare. Only around 2% of people who die in a hospital have the opportunity to become an organ donor, and families will always be asked to consent to donation,” says Jodie.
“The best thing you can do to help those that are waiting for a life-saving transplant is to register as an organ and tissue donor.”
As part of the Great Registration Race for DonateLife Week, we’re encouraging all staff and community members to join us in turning this around. Anyone aged 16+ can register as an organ and tissue donor.
It doesn’t matter how old you are, your medical history, your lifestyle, what country you’re from or how healthy you are – you can still register as an organ and tissue donor.
Registering is easy - it only takes one minute at donatelife.gov.au or just three taps in your Medicare app.
