Welcoming all at NBMLHD
04 Mar 2021
Across the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District we strive to provide inclusive, accessible and equitable services for our diverse community.
A number of our services are now using Welcome Here rainbow stickers to let everyone know that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) diversity is welcomed and celebrated at our services.
The Welcome Here Project supports services throughout Australia to create and promote environments that are visibly welcoming and inclusive of LGBTIQ+ communities.
The project has been adopted by our Sexual Health Clinics at Nepean and Katoomba as well as the Needle and Syringe Program.
“The Welcome Here project reinforces the values that we have here at the Clinic and it is a strong symbol against stigma and discrimination for our patients and staff,” says Joanne Gough, Nurse Unit Manager Sexual Health.
Working alongside Joanne is Sexual Health Nurse at Katoomba Hospital, Joanne Sage who says many patients from all over the region and further west are accessing their services.
“Over the past 2 years we’ve seen an increase in LGBTIQ+ people visiting the Clinic. Our staff are experts at discussing sexuality and make it extremely easy for people to talk about sexual behaviours,” says Joanne Sage, Sexual Health Nurse, Katoomba Hospital.
