Supportive & Palliative Care
Supportive and Palliative care is a service that helps to look after the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of someone living with a life limiting illness, and supports a person’s family and carers.
Palliative care helps people live their life as fully and as comfortably as possible. Palliative care helps people living with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, motor neuron disease and end-stage kidney or lung disease.
The Supportive and Palliative Care team includes:
- Aboriginal health worker
- Dietitian
- Family and/or carer
- General practitioner
- Nurse
- Occupational therapist
- Pastoral care
- Pharmacist
- Physiotherapist
- Psychologist
- Social worker
- Specialist doctor
- Supportive and palliative care volunteer
For some people, Supportive and Palliative care may be beneficial from the time of diagnosis with a serious life-limiting illness. Palliative care can be given alongside treatments given by other doctors.
Supportive & Palliative Care is provided across all care settings including hospitals, home, aged care facilities, and Nepean Cancer Care Centre with its satellite clinics.
Many people with a life limiting illness prefer to be at home with the care of family, friends and their community. There are services available to support people at home and people can be supported to die at home if they wish.
If it is no longer possible to stay at home, the health care team will talk about options for ongoing care. Hospitals can support people for short-term stays, but a person cannot return home and requires care for several weeks or months, other options will be explored.
