Nepean Redevelopment Stage 2 announced
The NSW Government has committed at least $450 million for Stage 2 of the Nepean Hospital redevelopment which boosts the total budget to over $1 billion for a new hospital, community-based health facilities and a multi-storey car park.
Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Chief Executive Kay Hyman welcomes the commitment which will ensure Stage 2 will seamlessly follow Stage 1.
“We have an opportunity to design, deliver and operate a truly world class hospital,” says Mrs Hyman.
“Equally important as ensuring the building is state of the art is the opportunity we have to deliver new models of care delivered in innovative ways supporting both residents of the Penrith area and through telehealth and other innovative models of care to all residents of the LHD area and beyond.”
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian made the announcement at Nepean Hospital on 25 March
NBMLHD Chair Peter Collins says the billion dollar commitment will help to realise Nepean Hospital’s full potential.
“Twenty-five years ago, as NSW Health Minister myself, I made Nepean a Teaching Hospital,” says Mr Collins.
“After that initial upgrade, nothing happened. There was no capital investment for two decades. This $1 billion pledge is a total game changer.”
Planning for Stage 2 will get underway later this year and construction will commence following the completion of Stage 1.
During the planning phase, the Nepean Redevelopment team will work closely with hospital staff, patients and the broader community to determine the clinical priorities for Stage 2 and ensure the future health needs of local communities can be met.
In parallel with the Nepean Redevelopment, Nepean Hospital’s emergency department is currently being refurbished to create extra clinical space and increase capacity.
The project includes six additional acute care beds, four additional emergency short stay beds and a paediatric area.
