Aboriginal Health

We acknowledge and respect the Darug, Gundungarra and Wiradjuri people as the traditional custodians of the land covered by the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Our Vision: Achieving Aboriginal health equity through strong partnerships. This is underpinned by the following principles:

The Aboriginal Health Unit, along with the Local Health District, has a very clear purpose and focus to improve the health of the local Aboriginal population. This is outlined in many state and organisational documents which work to achieve the NSW Health’s Strategic Priority No.1 – Keeping people healthy. This priority directs all health organisations to not only improve the health outcomes of the entire population but specifically those of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The primary functions of the Aboriginal Health Unit is to:

  • Provides expert cultural and strategic advice on policy, program and service delivery to the Board, Chief Executive, Executive Directors and other relevant stakeholders;
  • Undertakes continual engagement and partnering with local communities;
  • Establishes and/or maintain external partnership with key agencies including the Local Aboriginal Medical Service, the Nepean Blue Mountains Primary Health Network and other NGOs;
  • Assists Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District to address health needs of the local Aboriginal community and patients of services;
  • Leads on and/or support the design, implementation and evaluation of tailored clinical and population health programs; and
  • Undertakes and foster research to expand the intervention evidence base to identify and promote best practice models.
