Research Office

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District (NBMLHD) has a well-established national and international research program. The organisation has a strong commitment to research and teaching, as advances in medical, nursing and other research activities contribute directly to improved patient outcomes.

It is the aim of the Research Office to foster innovation in research and teaching. Our team is dedicated to supporting researchers and clinical staff and students in establishing research projects, and will provide assistance through the relevant research and governance processes which will facilitate valuable research.

Our website contains required information for researchers including guidelines, templates, checklists, meeting dates and policies.  Please explore the NBMLHD's Research Office website in the first instance and if you are unable to find the information or advice that you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact the Research Office on 4734 1998.

The approval of research applications is a two-tiered process:

Tier 1: Scientific and ethical approval

Tier 2: Site governance approval, via submission of a Site Specific Application (SSA)

Ethical approval is required before site governance approval can be obtained

All single site research projects to be conducted within NBMLHD should be submitted through the Research Ethics and Governance Information System (REGIS).

All multi-site research projects that are to be conducted within NSW or Inter State must be submitted through the Research Ethics and Governance Information System (REGIS).

Ethics

The Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC), examines the proposed study for scientific, clinical and ethical validity, ensuring as far as reasonably practicable, that the benefits of the study outweigh any side effects. Ethical approval can be sought for studies at single or multiple Public Health Organisation sites and facilities, and some external organisations affiliated with NBMLHD. Under the National Mutual Acceptance (NMA), the NBMLHD HREC is able to approve studies to be conducted within New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria,  Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia (For further information, please refer to NSW Health http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/ethics/Pages/nma.aspx).

Governance

Research governance examines the proposed quality, safety, privacy, risk management and financial management of the study, and does not look at the scientific, clinical or ethical validity of the study.  Research governance approval is required after ethical approval for each site/facility within NBMLHD where the study will be undertaken eg; separate site applications for Nepean Blue Mountains, Blue Mountains, Lithgow/Springwood.
