About the Perinatal Ultrasound Department

Perinatal Ultrasound provides an ultrasound service for obstetric and gynaecological patients within the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. The Department performs approximately 14,000 scans annually using high resolution 2D, 3D and 4D imaging.

The following obstetric and prenatal testing services are available in the department:

  • First Trimester Dating/Viability scans
  • First Trimester Nuchal Translucency Screening
  • 18-20 week Morphology Scans
  • Third Trimester Growth Scans
  • Tertiary Referrals
  • Obstetric and Gynaecological Ultrasound
  • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)
  • Amniocentesis
  • Counselling for NIPT (Non-invasive prenatal testing)
  • Fertility investigations including HyCoSy

Gynaecological imaging including transabdominal/transvaginal pelvic ultrasounds and sonohysterography is also available.

Information for patients

Where possible patients will be issued with images after the scan. The quality of these images is dependent on the position of the baby.

Generally recording of the examination is not permitted.

Please bring your Medicare Card and Referral.

It is not recommended that young children attend the scan as they may distract the sonographer/doctor performing the examination. This could affect the scan quality and accuracy.

For 1st and 2nd trimester scans please empty your bladder 1 hour before the scan. There is no need to drink additional fluid. Do not empty your bladder until your scan is complete.

For 3rd trimester scans no preparation is required.

If you are more than 20 minutes late for your appointment it may be rescheduled.

As well as providing a clinical service the department is heavily involved in research in obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound. You may be asked by the reception staff to participate in research projects and information will be provided to you.
